Graham Scott Gmus(Hons), PPRNCM

Head of School of Keyboard Studies, Tutor in Pianoforte

Biography:

Graham is Head of keyboard Studies at the RNCM and Artistic Director of the James Mottram International Piano Competition. He has previously held the positions of Visiting Lecturer in Keyboard Studies at the RSAMD in Glasgow and Head of Piano at the Chicago College of Performing Arts.

Described by Gramophone magazine as ‘an exceptional talent’, he has performed in New York (92nd St. Y), Washington DC (Kennedy Center), Los Angeles (Ambassador Auditorium), Tokyo (Suntory Hall), Paris (Bagatelle) as well as appearances in London at the Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Barbican Centre. He has appeared as soloist with many orchestras notably the London Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Royal Scottish National, Monte Carlo Philharmonic, Belgium National Symphony, Staatsphilharmonie Rheinlandpfalz, Cape Town Symphony, Singapore Symphony, St Louis Symphony and the New York Chamber Symphony with such conductors as Sir Charles Groves, Marin Alsop, Alexander Lazarev, Barry Wordsworth, Gregorz Nowak and Paul Daniel. As a chamber musician he has worked with players from the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Olivier Charlier, Henri Demarquette, the Vertavo String Quartet and the Stamic Quartet of Prague. His discography includes CDs of works by Scriabin, Gershwin, Macmillan and a live recital CD from Los Angeles. He has given numerous broadcasts on BBC Radio and National Public Radio in the USA.

Graham studied with Professor Ryszard Bakst at both Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music where he was the recipient of the Dayas Gold Medal and the Stefania Neikrasz Chopin Prize. While still a student he became the first artist to win both the Young Concert Artists inc. auditions in New York and the Young Concert Artists Trust auditions in London. He also won first prizes in the Dudley National Piano Competition and the Jaen International Piano Competition in Spain.
