For one of his final operas, Mozart examined political and romantic intrigue with a compelling return to the opera seria form in this profound masterwork.
Set in Rome at the time of the Emperor Titus, Mozart’s score, to a libretto by Metastasio, exposes a world of intrigue where jealousy, guilt and doublecrossing are the order of the day. With Rome in flames, an assassination attempt (motivated by romantic jealousy) leads to arrest and potential execution, yet the eponymous Titus overrides his Senate with a display of extraordinary clemency… La Clemenza di Tito represents a mature Mozart and is grand opera in every sense of the word. Overflowing with some of the most beautiful music that Mozart ever wrote, this new RNCM Opera production, performed in Italian with English surtitles, brings this epic drama to vivid life.
