Junior RNCM student wins Dorothy L Sayers Music Award

Joy Becker, currently studying violin with Leland Chen at the Junior RNCM, has been awarded the Dorothy L Sayers Music Award which is worth £500. Christopher Dean, Chairman of the Dorothy L. Sayers Society, presented the award to Joy following a concert by the Junior RNCM on Saturday 6 March.   

Joy, aged 16 and from Chorley, is also the Leader of the Junior Hallé Orchestra and a member of the National Youth Orchestra. She commented, ‘It means so much to know that there are people who support and believe in me and what I love to do, and The Dorothy L Sayers society are just that - with their help I have been able to afford another incredible year with the Junior RNCM!

RNCM student wins BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist competition

Second year euphonium student Matthew White has won the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist competition.

Matthew won over judges Richard Evans and Philip Cobb with his performance of the 2nd and 3rd Movements of Peter Graham’s concerto, In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen, with Richard commenting, 'There was some excellent playing with the winner having that little bit extra. He was so well prepared'.

Matthew is principal euphonium with Pemberton Old DW Band and the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and said of his success, ‘Winning the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist Award is a huge achievement for me as the competition was so strong. The prize of performing solos with the BBC Concert Orchestra live on Radio 2 will surely be a highlight of my playing career so far.'

RNCM wins China Education Links Award

The RNCM is delighted to have won the China Education Links award at the Greater China Business Awards for the North West, held at the Lowry Theatre on Friday 12 February.

The award is given to the North West organisation who has demonstrated the most success in establishing educational links with Greater China, encouraging a two way flow of students, personnel and expertise, and are awarded by UK Trade & Investment in association with the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

RNCM students win Yamaha Scholarships

Cellists Yoshika Masuda and Mikhail Nemtsov have won two of the three scholarships available from the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarship Competition. The competition is open to those studying at conservatoires aged 25 and under, and this year five of the ten finalists were RNCM students.

Yoshika is the founder member of the Isolani Quartet and won both the Sir John Manduell Prize and the Leonard Rose Cello Award in 2009 for outstanding achievement. He has also made a solo appearance with the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra and has performed in chamber concerts in Italy with the renowned violist Bruno Giuranna. Mikhail has won the 2009 Muriel Taylor Scholarship, the Maurice Ravel Grand Prix at the Maurice Ravel academy in Sean Jean de Luz, France and was one of the semi finalists in the Rostropovich International Cello Competition in Paris in December 2009.
