International Chamber Music Studio
The RNCM International Chamber Music Studio is an integral of life at the RNCM. Whatever direction your career finally takes, it is through participation in chamber music that you will develop and enhance the vital listening skills that you will need as a professional musician.
During your time at the RNCM you will benefit from a thriving and energetic programme of chamber music coaching delivered by a dedicated team of internationally renowned chamber musicians, headed by Petr Prause, Head of Chamber Music.
For undergraduates Chamber Music is a compulsory part of first and second year Ensemble Activities, delivered within the Professional Studies strand. At all other levels you can choose to build on your skills by pursuing some of the many exciting and varied options on offer. In particular, you can take it as a specialist pathway at MMus and Postgraduate Diploma level.
Key features which demonstrate the strength of the RNCM's chamber music programme include:
- A teaching team which includes: Pavel Fisher, Katherine Gowers, Gaby Lester, Jonathan Morton, Isabel Charisius, James Boyd, Simon Rowland-Jones, Emily Beynon, Matthew Hunt, Melinda Maxwell, John Miller, Carole Presland, Jeremy Young, Endellion Quartet, Navarra Quartet, Gould Piano Trio and Leopold String Trio.
- The annual International Chamber Music Festival which consists of visiting artist recitals, high profile performance opportunities for current students, masterclasses and lectures.
- Close links with some of the most important international chamber music centres and organisations. Recent exchanges include groups from France, Austria, Finland, Italy, Singapore and Australia. Since 2007, the RNCM has been the sole UK partner institution of the exciting European Chamber Music Academy, linking in, and providing teaching experiences with, conservatoires in Vienna, Helsinki, Paris, Hanover and Zurich. The RNCM is a founding board member of the European Chamber Music Teachers Association.
- Stimulating competitions and performance opportunities for chamber groups take place throughout the academic year.
- Outstanding student group successes include prizes in Melbourne 2007 International Chamber Music Competition, Vittorio Gui Competition, YCAT, Tunnell Trust, Tillet Trust, Royal Overseas League, Park Lane Group, Kirkman Concert Society and Countess of Munster Concert Scheme.
- Graduates of the RNCM International Chamber Music Studio have gone on to perform in world famous groups including Belcea Quartet, Tokyo Quartet, Grainger Quartet, Elias Quartet, Vanburgh Quartet, Leopold String Trio, Gould Piano Trio, Fibonaci, Raphael Ensemble, Goldberg Ensemble, Nash Ensemble, Apollo Saxophone Quartet, Nemo Brass and Travelling by Tuba.
