Thomas Pitfield cross-curricular educational resource pack

Investigating the life of Thomas Baron Pitfield: a teaching resource pack

Let us introduce you to Thomas Baron Pitfield, Tom to his friends, or perhaps it is better if he introduces himself...

'Thomas Baron Pitfield is my name:
To eminence or rank I have no claim,
(So in address my middle name's not vital -
Merely a Christian name and not a title).
It has been said by some, my music's good-work
For draughtsman-poet, qualified in woodwork;
And like another Thomas, surnamed Tucker,
I had to sing my song to earn my supper.'

He was an extraordinarily talented individual who spent his life creating a large volume of works in music, art, poetry and crafts.  Most of his work is now held at the RNCM Archives, with related material at Bolton Archives and Local Studies and Trafford Local Studies Library (you can access Bolton's catalogue at http://prism.bolton.gov.uk/TalisPrism; Trafford's catalogue is at http://libraries.trafford.gov.uk/TalisPrism/).  With the support of the Pitfield Trust and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council North West, we have used this wealth of material as the inspiration for these teaching resources.

Tom was an artist, a musician, a craftsman and a poet.  Have a look at some examples of his work below:

Birds about the morning air
Squander music everywhere,
Caring not if you or I
Keep their songs or let them die.

But the music that I make
Not so lightly I forsake,
Hoping that my songs will be
Cherished in your memory.

Front cover of Tom's 'Limusicks', front cover design also by Tom

Drawing of the Royal Manchester College of Music, by Tom                                 Examples of Tom's wood carvings: a horse, a nestling dove and a sheep

Over the next few pages, we hope to teach you about Tom's life, his work, and his beliefs.  He was an extraordinary individual with very passionate views on art, music, vegetarianism, and war, to name but a few!
