Alumnus Takes Charge at Annual Competition

Alumnus Adam Smith reigned victorious at this year’s Ferruccio Tagliavini International Singing Competition, winning First Prize, the Audience Prize, the Critic’s Prize, and the Prize for Best Tenor.

The 2011 graduate said: ‘It was quite an occasion and one that I’ll never forget. It’s really kick-started things for me properly, and given me the confidence to know that I’m definitely on the right track with my singing.’

The annual competition, which took place in Deutschlandsberg, Austria, was presented in three stages, with 85 singers (including 15 tenors) competing in the First Round, 21 in the Semi-Final, and 10 in the Final.

‘I sang ‘Ah leve toi Soleil’ from Romeo et Juliette and ‘Che gelida manina’ from La Bohème in the Final, and then performed at the Winner’s Concert in the Graz Opera House alongside the Opera Orchestra. It was a wonderful experience.’
