RNCM Pianist Wins International Competition

Undergraduate pianist Dominic Degavino has won the Piano Section final of the 2016 Tunbridge Wells International Young Concert Artists Competition.

Held at the Mayfield Festival of Music and the Arts between 27 April and 1 May, the competition was established in 1979 to provide a unique platform for advanced students and young professional musicians on the threshold of their careers, and is divided into three sections: piano, strings, and wood and brass.

Dominic, who has studied with Helen Krizos for over 10 years, said: ‘The whole event was a wonderful experience, and along with my own performances, it was also very inspiring to listen to recitals of such a high standard across all three categories. I am also incredibly grateful to Helen, who has helped and inspired me more than you could ever imagine.’

Over three rounds, Dominic played pieces by Scarlatti, John McCabe, Takemitsu, Liszt, Ives and Schumnn, before choosing a final programme of Chopin and Ligeti. In addition to a cash prize, the 20-year-old also won a recital opportunity at St Martin-in-the-Fields.
