RNCM Oboe Tutor’s New Work for BCMG

Melinda Maxwell, RNCM Consultant in Woodwind Studies and Senior Tutor in Oboe, has composed a new work that will be premiered by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG) later this month.

Conducted by Oliver Knussen, Fractures: Monk Unpacked will form part of the BCMG’s Comedy of Change programme at the CBSO Centre on Sunday 15 November. Melinda is Principal Oboist with the Group and was offered a BCMG commission to write this new piece, which uses Thelonious Monk’s Round Midnight as its creative lever, at Knusssen’s invitation.

Apart from her work as a recitalist and chamber musician, Melinda has also just completed a jazz CD, with Oboe Classics, including compositions of her own music plus jazz standards and other commissions. In early October she took part in a concert at the British Library of Indian music where she improvised with tabla player Sarvar Sabri to storytelling of Sufi tales by Dr Vayu Naidu.
