RNCM Opera Presents La Vie Parisienne

Glitz and glamour head to the College this season as RNCM Opera presents Offenbach’s La Vie Parisienne.

Directed by Stuart Barker, Director of Training and Productions at British Youth Opera, and conducted by Andrew Greenwood, who makes a welcome return after conducting the College’s award-winning 2015 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, La Vie Parisienne features talented students from the School of Vocal Studies and Opera, with set and costume design by Simone Romaniuk.

la vie test

It is 150 years since Offenbach conducted the 1866 première at the Théâtre du Palais Royal, Paris. Since then, La Vie Parisienne has become one of his most popular operettas and was his first full-length portrayal of contemporary Parisienne life. For this production, the action jumps forward to the height of the 1930s where two young Parisians, Roaul de Gardefeu and Bobinet, are in love with the beautiful Metella. Rejection, deception and flirtation follow as this light-hearted love story takes the audience on a whistle-stop tour of Paris’ glittering nightlife.’

Professor Lynne Dawson, Head of Vocal Studies and Opera, said: ‘La Vie Parisienne is an exciting whirlwind of flirtatious masquerade and romantic intrigue. Paris is easy to love, and this work brings the city to life in glorious technicolour through its witty storytelling and magical music. It’s also an excellent ‘way in’ to opera if you’ve never seen one before as well as appealing to those who are familiar with the genre.’

Each year RNCM Opera presents three varied productions. Recent highlights include Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Weill’s Street Scene, Lehár’s The Merry Widow, Sondheim’s Company and a vocal and jazz band event – Too Darn Hot. The RNCM boasts a substantial list of successful vocal and opera alumni, many of whom are now tutors at the College. A significant number of alumni appear regularly at major international opera houses and concert halls, including Barry Banks, Alice Coote, Sara Fulgoni, Simon Keenlyside, David Kempster, Andrew Shore, Dame Ann Murray and Sir John Tomlinson. Recent alumni singing internationally include Kathryn Rudge, Soraya Mafi, Sarah Tynan, Christopher Turner and Nadine Livingston.

La Vie Parisienne runs at the RNCM between Wednesday 7 and Saturday 17 December. It features the RNCM Opera Orchestra and Chorus and will be performed in English with a translation by leading political satirist Alistair Beaton.
