Making the most of Open Day

Open Days are a great way for you to learn more about the RNCM and to see if it’s the right place for you. If you’re joining us, it’s important that you get the most out of your visit.

Student Ambassador and fourth year cellist, Abi Davies gives an insight into what people like to learn about the RNCM on the day, and offers advice on making the day as useful as possible…

What do visitors normally ask about during Open Day?

Performance Opportunities
One of the most frequent questions asked by prospective students is about the performance opportunities they’ll get both at the College and around Manchester. There are countless opportunities for students in all years – from the Symphony Orchestra to the Session Orchestra, students never get bored or tired of being here.

On top of this we have lots of masterclasses from visiting tutors and performers, coaching sessions and technique workshops. No matter what genre of music you’re interested in, the RNCM caters for it at an exceptional standard.

Consultation Lessons
Another thing I get asked a lot about is consultation lessons. It’s completely up to you whether you want to organise a consultation lesson at the RNCM. They can be helpful before auditions to see if you’re ready for music college, or to help you decide if a conservatoire is actually the best thing for you – especially if you’re undecided between this and university.

It can also be good to get a consultation lesson once you have received an offer to come here. If you opt for this, you’ll get two half hour lessons during an Offer Holders’ Day, which usually takes place in January.

Manchester
People always want to know what the city’s like. Manchester is an incredible place to start your adult life. There are loads of venues to watch concerts, like Manchester Arena, o2 Apollo, Etihad Stadium and Bridgewater Hall, as well as smaller spaces like the Deaf Institute, Band on the Wall, and Soup Kitchen.

Manchester is also full of historical and cultural things to do like museums and art galleries, and it’s home to the vibrant Northern Quarter.

Any tips for our Open Day visitors?

Students in RNCM foyer

To make the most of your visit it’s important that you talk to current students within and outside of your school of study. They will know the answers to all your questions and can give first-hand insight into what studying here is like.

Our Welfare and Finance Teams are also on hand to address any queries or concerns you may have.

And finally…

Attending the concert and the sessions that are put on during the day will give you a brilliant idea of the standard of playing and the amazing repertoire you could work on.

Make sure your day is completely full and that you go to as much as possible. Most importantly – enjoy the day!
