Abel Selaocoe

South African cellist Abel Selaocoe explores the capacity of the cello across a range of genres, from collaborating with beatboxers and world musicians to giving concerto performances and solo classical recitals.

Abel has performed as a soloist with Johannesburg, KZN and Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestras and plays regularly with the BBC Philharmonic, Aldeburgh Britten Pears Young Artist Programme and Multi-Storey. His love of improvisation and world music led him to co-founding Kabantu, a global folk fusion quintet whose success has led them to performances all over the UK, from the BBC Proms to Ulverston International Festival, as well as several broadcasts on BBC Radio 3. Abel graduated from the RNCM in 2016, returning last year to study on the International Artist Diploma course with Hannah Roberts. His studies were supported by the Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust, a Dorothy Stone Scholarship, the Lord and Lady Lurgan Trust, the Jellis Bequest and the Musicians’ Company Motesiczky Scholarship.
