Colin studied at the Royal College of Music with Sidney Fell, Basil Tschaikov and Stephen Trier and was appointed Principal Bass Clarinet with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in 2003 having been with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra since 1979. While at college, he was chosen to appear in a BBC TV clarinet master class given by Jack Brymer. He has played with the BBC Symphony, London Philharmonic, Hallé, RSNO, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and English National Opera among others.

He enjoys playing chamber music and is a regular member of Zephyr Winds. He has also played with the BCMG, Psappha and Ensemble 10:10, of which he was a founder member. Colin was invited to go to South Africa to take part in educational workshops in Soweto and a chamber music concert in Johannesburg. He also tutored at the first ever Summer Music Camp on Grand Cayman and performed at the British Consulate in Shanghai with a group of Chinese students.
