Tutor in Guitar (Popular Music)

Salford born guitar Tutor, Mike Walker’s passion for guitar was heavily influenced by his own interest in jazz but flavoured by a broad spectrum of genres across the musical spectrum.

In addition to recording and touring Europe and the USA with the George Russell ‘Living Time’ Orchestra, with whom he was a member for 18 years, Mike has performed and recorded with many artists including Steve Swallow, Arild Anderson, John Taylor, Vince Mendoza, Mike Gibbs, Mark Anthony Turnage, Tal Farlow, Palle Mikkelborg, Mica Paris and Norma Winstone.

Having been commissioned to write original music for Manchester Jazz Festival, Mike composed a suite entitled ‘Ropes’ featuring a twenty-two piece orchestra and Jazz quintet. The suite was performed at the RNCM to a packed theatre and received a standing ovation.

Mike is a member of The Printmakers alongside Nikki Illes, Norma Winstone, Mark Lockhart, James Maddren and Steve Watts, and has also been busy composing and touring with The Impossible Gentlemen, a new group he co-leads with celebrated British piano player Gwilym Simcock, also featuring Adam Nussbaum and Steve Swallow. Their first album entitled ‘The Impossible Gentlemen’ was released in 2010. In 2013 the group were named ‘Best Jazz Ensemble’ at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

Mike runs various Guitar/Improvisation Schools in Spain, Italy, Scotland, Wales and the Lake District and teaches across Europe.
