Gabriela Montero Improvisations

‘Montero’s playing has everything: crackling rhythmic brio, subtle shadings, steely power in climactic moments, soulful lyricism in the ruminative passages and, best of all, unsentimental expressivity.’ New York Times

Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero is a truly original artist who forges a deep connection with her audience. In addition to her visionary interpretations of core piano repertoire, she is also celebrated for her ability to improvise, composing and playing new works in real time. She says: ‘I connect to my audience in a completely new way – and they connect with me. Because improvisation is such a huge part of who I am, it is the most natural and spontaneous way I can express myself.’

She regularly invites her audience to choose themes and ideas on which she improvises – to date, she has tackled everything from Lady Gaga to Baa Baa Black Sheep! You’ll get the chance to test Gabriela’s improvising talents at the end of the evening, following her interpretations of scenes from childhood as seen through the eyes of various composers.
