Our new series of Research Forums will be livestreamed from the RNCM YouTube channel. Talks usually last about an hour, including a Q&A session. Join us in person or watch this session livestreamed.
Though less commonplace than its fretted cousin, the fretless guitar inhabits a range of musical genres and cultures around the world. A leading exponent of the fretless electric guitar, Rich has explored the expressive potentialities of this instrument through a range of creative endeavours, including: collaboration with composers; the development of new techniques, timbres and notations; application within improvisatory ensembles; use in commercial contexts; microtonal musics; and intercultural collaboration. By drawing from concepts of affordance and collaborative creativity, this talk will provide a critique of Rich’s work with the fretless electric guitar to date, as well as offer insights into the ways in which ‘fretlessness’ – when viewed as a ‘state of practice’ – might benefit the modern guitarist.
Free admission, no ticket required.
