School of Composition – Audition Requirements
Your audition will last one hour, this includes 30 minutes preparation time.
Both undergraduate and postgraduate applicants are required to submit three scores, and where possible, recordings (e.g. MP3 or video/audio links) electronically via Acceptd. Recordings without scores will not be considered and all scores must be submitted by 1 October 2018.
Each piece should be a single document (please do not send each page of your score separately). These are first assessed by a small selection panel.
Following this, selected candidates will be invited for an audition in person. This consists of an interview with the Head of School and an additional Composition Tutor.
There are two formal elements:
- A viva voce in music analysis (30 minutes’ preparation time)
- A free harmonisation for undergraduates
This is your chance to shine, so it’s good to remember that during this time we’ll be looking for candidates who demonstrate a real passion for composition and a determination to develop their compositional voice at conservatoire level.
During the interview you will also be asked to talk about your background, work and study aims, as well as to discuss your portfolio. You will have the opportunity to ask any additional questions about composition at the RNCM.
While you’re at the College, undergraduate applicants will be asked to complete a short multiple choice test lasting around 45 minutes. This will take place on site and is designed to help us understand more about your knowledge of music theory, general musicianship and contextual awareness. The test isn’t pass or fail, but results may be used in cases where a decision is difficult to reach on the basis of the practical audition alone.
