School of Keyboard Studies – Audition Requirements

Your audition will last 15 – 20 minutes plus an additional 20-minute warm-up time.

This is your chance to excel, so it’s good to remember that during this time we’ll be looking for candidates who demonstrate potential and a passion for music.

It’s also worth noting that the audition will include a short sight-reading test, after which the panel will ask some general questions in order to get to know you a little more and to assess your suitability for the course. To help you prepare, typical interview questions include: What did you like about the way you played today? And, What sort of things do you think you can improve?

While you’re at the College, undergraduate applicants will be asked to complete a short multiple choice test lasting around 45 minutes. This will take place on site and is designed to help us understand more about your knowledge of music theory, general musicianship and contextual awareness. The test isn’t pass or fail, but results may be used in cases where a decision is difficult to reach on the basis of the practical audition alone.

Please use the menus below to find specific audition requirements for your programme. If you have any queries, please email or call 0161 907 5465.

You should prepare THREE or FOUR contrasting pieces of your choice lasting about 15 – 20 minutes in total. The panel will then select pieces to play from your programme.

It’s also worth noting that this audition will include a quick study test. This means we’ll hear a short excerpt which you will have prepared in your warm-up room beforehand.
