PAE-RNCM Foundation Programme
The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) and Poly Arts Education Investment Company Limited (PAE) have established a new programme to support Chinese high school students aspiring to study at a conservatoire.
Strategic partners since 2020, the RNCM and PAE (part of the China Poly Group) are dedicated to promoting curriculum development, teacher training and international cultural exchanges. As one of its first collaborative projects, the PAE-RNCM International Undergraduate Foundation Programme in Music Performance is a one-year course designed to enhance the fundamental skills needed to study degree-level music.
After completing pre-entry assessment (including an audition, interview, music theory test and English language test) students are enrolled onto the full-time programme, which provides in person and online classes in English and Mandarin.
The curriculum includes one-to-one Principal Study lessons with RNCM tutors, alongside music theory and English language courses by staff at PAE. Students will also benefit from monthly rehearsals and performances at Linping Grand Theatre, one of the most professional music performance halls in Hangzhou.
Students who achieve more than 75% in all areas will be awarded the PAE-RNCM International Foundation Programme Completion Certificate in Music Performance. Additionally, those who meet the relevant entrance requirements will be admitted to one of the RNCM’s two main undergraduate degrees: The Bachelor of Music with Honours or the Bachelor of Music with Honours in Popular Music.
Professor Linda Merrick, RNCM Principal, said: ‘Since forming our innovative partnership over 12 months ago, we are excited to launch this new programme to support the development of young musicians in China. To study at a world-class conservatoire requires hard work, dedication, and a true passion for music. I am pleased that, together with PAE, we can enhance the skills needed and provided a solid foundation for those with an aspiration to study music at a high level.’
Mr Peng Chen, PAE’s General Manager, said: ‘The cooperation between Poly Arts Education and the RNCM in establishing the PAE-RNCM International Undergraduate Foundation Programme in Music Performance is ground-breaking and mutually beneficial. This programme will support the development of talented young musicians in China, providing them the opportunity to train in a world-class conservatoire. We also hope that this programme will facilitate student and teacher exchanges between PAE and the RNCM, contributing to the promotion of educational and cultural collaboration between China and the UK.’
