About
Written during the summer of 1944, the turning tide of the Second World War provided the backdrop to Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony. When conducting the premiere the following year, Prokofiev’s downbeat was famously delayed by the sound of celebratory gunfire as Soviet troops entered Germany, forever tying the Symphony to this moment of historic significance.
Sweeping melodies, cinematic orchestral colours and exciting shifts in mood combine to create a work of immense scale and grandeur. Describing it as a celebration of the human spirit, Prokofiev declared his Fifth Symphony to be a work that ‘praises the free and happy man’.
Before this, winner of the RNCM Concerto Competition, Madeleine Brown, joins the RNCM Symphony Orchestra to perform Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto. Premiered by the composer himself in 1909, the concerto has long been regarded the ‘Mount Everest’ of the piano repertoire, with technical demands that have challenged even the most virtuosic soloists. Opening with a melody that Rachmaninov claimed ‘simply wrote itself’, the emotionally rich, song-like piano writing is accompanied by lush orchestral textures.
The evening opens with a new work by one of our composition students.
