RNCM James Mottram International Piano Competition

Russian pianist Elizaveta Ukrainskaia has won the 2018 RNCM James Mottram International Piano Competition (JMIPC), held at the College between 26 November and 1 December.

Elizaveta, who studies at the St Petersburg Conservatory with Alexander Sandler, performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 4 in G major to secure the £10,000 First Prize.

The £5000 Second Prize was awarded to German Knut Hanssen, who performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 5 in E flat major ‘Emperor’, while South Korean Hyesu Lee secured the £2500 Third Prize with a performance of the same piece.

All finalists were accompanied by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Robert Spano, and the competition again had the support of media partner Classic FM and Yamaha. The final was live streamed on You Tube.

The James Mottram International Piano Competition is a major biennial event that offers an all-round learning experience for young pianists from all over the world, mixing opportunities to perform on the concert platform with a series of masterclasses given by a distinguished international jury. This year the competition received over 90 applications, 30 of which made it through to the live rounds in Manchester.

It is thanks to a generous bequest from the late James Mottram that the RNCM is able to present the competition.
