Black Dyke Wins National Championships

The Black Dyke Band has won the 2014 National Championships of Great Britain, just one month after securing the British Open title.

Led by Nicholas Childs, recently granted the title of Professor by the RNCM, the win took Black Dyke’s tally of national titles to 23 and marked the seventh time in its 160-year history that it achieved the highly sought after double.

Talking to 4barsrest Professor Childs, who has led the band for 14 years, said he was ‘absolutely thrilled’ to have won the competition, classing it as ‘a day to remember.’

Held at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday 11 October and adjudicated by Michael Bach, Derek Broadbent and Stephen Roberts, 20 brass bands took part in the Championships, each performing The Legend of King Arthur by alumnus Peter Meechan.

Following the win Black Dyke, a professional partner of the RNCM whose players comprise a number of current students and alumni (including Principal cornet Richard Marshall and Principal euphonium Gary Curtin), will represent England in the 2015 European Championships.
