Double Award Win for RNCM Alumnus

Alumnus James Hendry was celebrating last night after scooping two British Education Awards.

A brand new initiative, the British Education Awards were established last year to identify and celebrate individuals who have excelled within our education system. Divided into four categories (GCSE, A Level, Vocational and Degree), James won both the Regional Degree Award and the National Award for his outstanding achievements during his studies.

The 24-year-old, who graduated last year with a Master of Music in Performance (Répétiteur), said: ‘I was thrilled to be nominated by the RNCM for this inaugural event and was honoured, not only to be at the ceremony as a finalist, but to be awarded two awards during the evening.’

Twenty-three winners were announced at the ceremony and prizes were handed to students across the full spectrum of education in subjects ranging from engineering and technology to music and the arts, agriculture, healthcare and cookery. Winners had also demonstrated an exemplary level of commitment to their studies, or another activity, beyond their mandatory learning requirements.

The results follow a fantastic 12 months for James, who last year was announced as one of three new Conductors/Répétiteurs on the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme (JPYAP), based at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. This prestigious scheme supports the artistic development of young professional singers, conductors, directors and répétiteurs at the start of their careers. During their placement, young directors and répétiteurs of the programme join music and directing staff of The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet.
