John Miller is RNCM’s New Head of Wind, Brass and Percussion

The RNCM is pleased to announce that Professor John Miller has been appointed the new Head of the School of Wind, Brass and Percussion, commencing on September 1 2013.

John joined the staff of the RNCM in 1999 as Director of Brass Studies, becoming Deputy Head of Wind Brass and Percussion in 2007. Prior to this, he had worked extensively in London as a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra from 1977 to 1994, and a freelance musician working regularly with prestigious ensembles such as the London Sinfonietta and the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. John is a founder member of the Wallace Collection, with which he has recorded and performed an extensive output of baroque brass repertory.

John read music at King’s College, Cambridge, and subsequently won three awards which enabled him to study the trumpet as a postgraduate student in the USA.  He has had long associations both with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and the European Union Youth Orchestra, and prior to joining the RNCM, held a teaching position at GSMD in London.

On his appointment, he said: ‘I am thrilled to be the next Head of Wind Brass and Percussion at the RNCM, following on from a line of exceptional musicians which started with my mentor, Philip Jones. The College’s statement of vision starts with the phrase ‘building on our strengths and values’. That’s my vision too – leading our wonderful body of staff and students.’
