Junior RNCM’s Adam Spry reaches competition final

Congratulations to Junior RNCM student Adam Spry, through to the final of the 2021 NCEM Young Composers Award.

Adam Spry

The 15-year-old, who attends Manchester Grammar School and who joined Junior RNCM in September to study trombone and composition, is one of five composers competing in the 18 and under category.

His shortlisted piece, Sweet Hop, will be performed by recorder quartet Palisander on Thursday 13 May in a workshop presented by composer Christopher Fox. Following this, all five finalists will hear their works performed to a panel of judges during a live concert, with the winner announced afterwards.

Presented in association with BBC Radio 3 and Palisander, the NCEM Young Composers Award launched in 2008 and is the only such scheme in the UK. It offers a unique opportunity for young composers to engage with the instruments and performance styles of early music, and to work with leading professional early musicians.

In bridging the worlds of ‘early’ and ‘new’ music, the Award complements the NCEM’s education policy, to support and nurture young composers and demonstrate to all participants that the music of previous centuries is relevant to today’s creative endeavours.
