Peter Sheppard Skærved granted title of Honorary Professor

We’re delighted to announce that Peter Sheppard Skærved has been granted the title of Honorary Professor at the RNCM.

A renowned violinist, chamber musician and researcher, Peter has performed as a soloist in over 30 countries and has had more than 400 works written for him by composers such as Judith Weir, Michael Finnissy and Hans Werner Henze. A prolific recording artist, both as a soloist and as leader of the Kreutzer Quartet, he is also the recipient of numerous awards and a former Grammy Award nominee.

An integral part of his performing life, Peter’s research interests include ‘Revolutionary’ String playing: the disciples of Giovanni Battista Viotti, in their milieu of post-revolutionary Paris; Tartini’s 30 Piccole Sonate; Beethoven and his Werkstatt: the impact of Beethoven’s circle of string players and pupils on his sonata writing; Music and Painting, from the work of painter-composers to collaboration with numerous galleries (Tate St Ives, V & A, British Museum, NPG etc.); Joseph Joachim: his collaborations, technical approach and subsequent influence; and Niccolo Paganini: performance practice, instruments, and influences.

Professor Linda Merrick, Principal, said: ‘We are immensely proud of the relationship Peter has developed with the RNCM over recent years and in particular his connection to our world-leading Research Department. His Honorary Professorship has been awarded in recognition of his contribution to music research and the positive impact his work has had on the industry.’
