Pianist Tom Hicks Reaches Finals of Ferruccio Busoni Competition

Fourth year pianist Tom Hicks has reached the Finals of the 60th Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition.

Established in 1949 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the death of pianist and composer Ferruccio Busoni, the once annual competition now takes on a biennial structure, with the first year dedicated to Selections and the second to the Finals. Twenty-four competitors have successfully made it through to the final round, which is scheduled to take place in Bolzano, Italy, next August.

Tom, who is studying on the Joint Course, run in conjunction with the University of Manchester, said: ‘Its a great honour to be selected for the Finals and I’m extremely excited about preparing all of the repertoire before finally performing in Italy next summer. Of course, I’m very grateful for the support of my tutor, Murray McLachlan.’

If successful, Tom will join a long list of prestigious winners, including Martha Argerich, who won First Prize in 1957.
