RNCM awarded grant to support archive networking project

We’ve been awarded a grant of over £12,000 from The National Archives to establish a new network connecting three music archives in Greater Manchester.

Part of The National Archives Collaborate and Innovate: Networks for Change initiative, the project brings together the archives of the RNCM, Hallé and Henry Watson Music Archive, to explore and share the histories of musicians who studied or performed in the region.

Over the course of the year, stakeholder consultations will take place to ensure the network works well and delivers on its goals. And to help it reaches its full potential, archivists from each partner institution are inviting heritage projects and historians to get involved.

Heather Roberts, RNCM Archivist, said: ‘We’ll be creating a website so that we can share information gathered from across the network and Manchester Digital Musical Archive has kindly agreed to host any digital content containing the stories of Manchester’s classical music past. If anyone would like to learn more or are interested in getting involved, we’d love to hear from them.’

Professor Barbara Kelly, RNCM Director of Research, added: ‘This fantastic opportunity brings together the archives of three important Manchester institutions, making the city’s rich musical past available to a wider and more diverse public.’
