RNCM International Student Scheme Shortlisted for THE Award

An RNCM scheme designed to support international students and enhance their learning experience has been shortlisted for the 2016 Times Higher Education Awards

Nominated in the Outstanding International Student Strategy category, the Read with the World project was devised to help international students at the College develop their language skills and cross-cultural competencies using a buddy scheme and a series of graded reading books.

The RNCM pairs international and home students in a book-pal system, where students choose a book from the graded scheme in the RNCM Library and arrange to meet regularly and discuss what they’ve been reading.

The project has had significant impact on international students, not only facilitating cross-cultural exchanges but also developing enduring friendships across cultural groups, enabling international students to engage in their new surroundings and study culture in a holistic way.

English Language Learning Support Tutor, Jean Ammar, said: ‘Absolutely delighted that our application has been shortlisted for an award. Our work is centred on providing the very best support for our international students while helping them to feel part of the RNCM family.‘

The success of the project has already been recognised with an RNCM Teaching Award and an award from The Higher Education Academy (HEA), working in partnership with the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA). The project has also been the subject of an article for UKCISA Integration Case Studies published by the University of Warwick.

The 2016 Times Higher Education Awards take place on Thursday 24 November.
