A cappella group Northern Voices through to competition semi-final

Congratulations and good luck to our amazing Northern Voices on reaching the semi-finals of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) competition.

The 15-piece group, comprising students from our Popular Music degree programme, were one of 10 university ensembles to take part in the quarter-finals at The Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh on Saturday 26 January.

And the good news didn’t stop there. The event also saw Pete Morgan, fresh from hearing his new work Let’s Get Together close the Music for Youth Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in November, pick up the Outstanding Vocalist prize for Lost in the Waves.

Formed in 1996, the ICCA is the only international tournament to showcase student and professional a cappella singing. Featuring over 450 ensembles competing in nine regions across the US and Europe, it believes that competition fosters growth, as groups work towards a specific goal, cultivating lifelong friendships and creating lasting experiences.

Each group receives feedback from highly qualified judges and gains the opportunity to connect with larger audiences from around the world, learning form their peers and finding inspiration in other groups.

The semi-finals take place on Saturday 9 March at London’s New Wimbledon Theatre, with the finals set for Saturday 27 April at the PlayStation Theatre, New York.
