Alumnus John McCabe Honoured at the Ivors
Congratulations to composer and alumnus, John McCabe CBE, who received The Ivors Classical Music Award at yesterday’s 59th Ivor Novello Awards ceremony.
The prestigious award celebrates the outstanding achievements of the prolific composer, who has created a vast body of works including symphonies, ballets, and solo works for the piano throughout his career.
He said of the award: ‘This award is a tremendous honour, not only on its own account but also because it comes from the organisation representing music’s creators – they understand only too well the problems we share, the disciplines we have in common, and this makes for a community whose respect is to be relished.
‘It is also an award recognising the important place different kinds of music, including classical, have in the fascinating, life-enhancing world of music.’
John McCabe attended the Royal Manchester College of Music (which later became the RNCM) in the 1960s, as a piano pupil of the late Gordon Green and composition student with Thomas B Pitfield.
