Alumnus Wins Raducanu Jazz Competition
Alumnus Sam Healey recently won the Grand Prize and 5000 euros at the Raducanu Jazz Competition held in Braila, Romania.
Named after pianist Johnny Raducanu, the uncle of RNCM alumnus Michael Cretu, the competition coincided with the Braila Jazz Festival and was broadcast live on Romanian television.
Alto saxophonist Sam, who graduated in 2013, said of the achievement: ‘This was my first solo competition so it was a real honour to not only win the Grand Prize but to have the opportunity to gain experience in competitions and meet like-minded musicians making connections all across Europe.’
The Competition took place over three days and competitors were asked to perform a 15 minute recital which included a jazz standard and either a piece of their own choice or a work by Raducanu.
