BBC Proms commission for RNCM composer

Second year undergraduate Xia Sloane has been commissioned to write a piece for this year’s BBC Proms.

Earthward, a six-minute work reflecting climate change, a subject close to Xia’s heart, will be performed by VOCES8 at Cadogan Hall on Monday 22 July.

Born in 2000, Xia began taking formal composition lessons at the age of 12 and now studies with Professor Emily Howard, kindly supported by a Gough Kelly Award. Since then, they’ve been a composer with the Aldeburgh Young Musicians, National Youth Orchestra and Britten Sinfonia Academy. Xia also secured success at numerous competitions, including The Cambridge Young Composer of the Year, Joan Weller Composition Prize, Humphrey Searle Composition Award, Royal Philharmonic Society/Classic FM 25th Birthday commissions, and BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition.

Tickets for the BBC Proms concert are already sold out, but disappointed listeners can still tune in to Radio 3 for the live broadcast at 1pm.
