Calleja Supports Your RNCM
Award-winning tenor Joseph Calleja is the latest musician to pledge his support to Your RNCM.
Joseph, who was born in Malta and is recognised as one of his country’s biggest celebrities, is currently performing the title role in Gounod’s Faust at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden alongside Bryn Terfel and RNCM alumnus Simon Keenlyside. Earlier this month he won the Readers’ Award at the International Opera Awards, established to recognise everyone – both on and off-stage – involved in opera production.
On becoming a Your RNCM champion he said: ‘I’m delighted to support the campaign for a new performing space at the RNCM as I have long admired the College’s commitment to excellence in training the next generation of musicians. Having the right hall to practice and perform in is an invaluable part of any musician’s training and I wish everyone involved in this campaign every success.’
Your RNCM officially launched in October 2013 and has so far received support from scientist and TV presenter Professor Brian Cox, BBC 6 Music presenter Stuart Maconie, Classic FM’s John Suchet, pianist Lang Lang and, among others, trumpeter Alison Balsom.
To date, the College has raised almost half of its £3 million target and work on the transformation, completed by Styles & Wood, is well underway. Incorporated in the plans is a complete redevelopment of the Concert Hall to include a new air-conditioning and heating system, new flooring and seating, advanced technical facilities and lighting, in addition to a balcony and raised floor area to considerably increase capacity. The backstage production areas of both the Concert Hall and RNCM Theatre will also be reconfigured to support increased student numbers and provide a professional learning environment at industry standard.
