RNCM at the BBC Proms
This year’s BBC Proms line-up has just been announced and there’s lots of involvement from RNCM singers and musicians.
Running between 14 July and 9 September, this year’s Proms promises eight weeks of concerts, talks, workshops, family events and more before things draw to a close with the famous Last Night of the Proms.
RNCM alumni highlights at the Royal Albert Hall include Stephen Hough’s performance of Brahms’ First Piano Concert alongside the BBC Philharmonic (Prom 20), fellow pianist Steven Osborne playing the world première of Julian Anderson’s Piano Concerto with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (Prom 16), mezzo-soprano Alice Coote leading an all-star Glyndebourne cast in a semi-staged performance of Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito (Prom 59), the BBC Philharmonic playing the London première of Mark Simpson’s The Immortal (Prom 17), and mezzo-soprano Christine Rice joining the BBC Symphony Orchestra and array of soloists for the Last Night of the Proms (Prom 75). Elsewhere, as part of the Proms at… series, Sian Edwards conducts the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and soloists including Jennifer France in a concert at Wilton’s Music Hall, and the Elias Quartet perform Schubert’s String Quintet in C at Cadogan Hall.
But it’s not just alumni making their mark this year. First year saxophonist Jess Gillam (pictured) is set to perform as part of the Celebrating John Williams Prom with the BBC Concert Orchestra (Prom 8) and as part of the Ten Pieces Presents events with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Proms 11 and 12). Tenor Andrew Masterson and bass-baritone Timothy Bagley have also been chosen to join the BBC Philharmonic in their performance of Beethoven’s Fidelio (Prom 9).
