RNCM composers shortlisted for Ivors Composer Awards
Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Matthew Sergeant, Gavin Higgins and Gary Carpenter are amongst the names shortlisted for The Ivors Composer Awards 2019.
Now in their 17th year, the prestigious awards honour the best new works by UK contemporary composers in classical, jazz and sound art.
Sir Harrison, a graduate of the Royal Manchester College of Music, appears in the Solo or Duo category with Keyboard Engine; Matthew, a 2007 alum, appears in the Small Chamber category with Meeting the Universe Halfway; The Book of Miracles, a trombone concerto by 2005 graduate Gavin, competes in the Orchestral category; while Gary Carpenter, an RNCM Professor in Composition, has two works in the running: Mondarian, shortlisted in the Chamber Ensemble category, and Ghost Songs, which is up for the Amateur or Young Performers Award alongside The Salamander and the Moonraker by former Principal, Edward Gregson.
Celebrating the art of composition and showcasing the creative talent of contemporary composers and sound artists, the winners in each category will be announced at a ceremony at the British Museum in London on Wednesday 4 December 2019.
