RNCM productions nominated for MTAs

Congratulations to everyone involved in RNCM Opera’s production of Cendrillon and RNCM Young Company’s Singin’ in the Rain, both nominated for Manchester Theatre Awards.

Directed by Olivia Fuchs and conducted by Martin André, Massenet’s Cendrillon took place in December and featured a double cast from the School of Vocal Studies and Opera, with set and costume design by Yannis Thavoris. It’s up for the Best Opera award alongside three productions from Opera North.

MTA reviewer Robert Hamilton said: ‘I’ve always enjoyed the student operas at RNCM, and this production of Massenet’s masterful fairy tale, Cendrillon, was one of the best.’

RNCM Young Company, our musical theatre group for young people aged 13 to 18 who have a passion for performance, celebrates its 10th anniversary this season with a production of West Side Story (22 – 24 Feb). Singin’ in the Rain, which appears in the Youth Panel Award category, took place last April and was directed Caroline Clegg with Alex Robinson as musical director.

MTA reviewer Georgina Wells said: ‘This show is a testament to the talent and hard work of the RNCM Young Company and, just like the 1952 film, it left me with the biggest smile on my face.’

The Manchester Theatre Awards were established in 2011 to replace the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards, set up in 1981. The RNCM won a total of seven MEN Awards between 1990 and 2005, and was nominated an additional four times. Since the Manchester Theatre Awards took over, the RNCM has won one Best Opera accolade (for 2015’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream), and has been nominated for productions in 2012, 13, 14 and 16.
