RNCM Singer Wins Kathleen Ferrier Bursary
Bass-baritone Steffan Lloyd Owen has won the 2015 Kathleen Ferrier Society Bursary for Young Singers.
The annual award, established in memory of the famous contralto (pictured above), is presented to a singer entering their second year of study at a conservatoire and is one of the most well-known singing competitions in the world.
Sixteen singers took part in the competition (two from each of the major music colleges in the UK, Scotland and Wales), narrowed down to six in the second round and three in the final, all of whom were awarded a prize. This year’s judges included RNCM Tutor in Vocal Studies, Sandra Dugdale, pictured above with Steffan and fellow judges Linda Hirst and Omar Ebrahim.
Steffan is taught by Matthew Best and will be performing the role of George Jones in the RNCM’s December production of Kurt Weill’s Street Scene.
