RNCM Welcomes New Director of Research

Professor Barbara Kelly joins the RNCM this month (April) as Director of Research.

An internationally-renowned scholar of late 19th and early 20th century French music and culture, Barbara has published on composers including Milhaud, Debussy, Ravel, Charpentier and Honegger, and on issues such as nationalism and identity and anti-Semitism in France.

After graduating from Glasgow University with a degree in Music and English, she studied for a Master’s in musicology at the University of Illinois before undertaking a PhD at Liverpool entitled Darius Milhaud and the French Musical Tradition.

Barbara will join the College from her role as Faculty Research Director for the Humanities and Social Science at Keele University, where she previously held the positions of Senior Lecturer and Programme Director for Music.

She said: ‘I am delighted to be joining the RNCM as Director of Research. I’m really looking forward to working in such a vibrant and world-leading musical environment. It is an exciting time to be leading on research given the outstanding result in the REF (Research Excellence Framework). I look forward to working with colleagues and students to ensure the continued visibility of the College’s research nationally and internationally.’
