Sara Fulgoni appointed Deputy Head of Vocal Studies

The RNCM is delighted to announce the appointment of Sara Fulgoni as Deputy Head of Vocal Studies.

A leading mezzo-soprano, Sara studied at the RNCM with Barbara Robotham, Nicholas Powell and April Cantelo, graduating in 1993. Since then, she has enjoyed a prominent career at the highest international level, appearing at some of the world’s major opera houses and concert halls, in a wide variety of repertoire.

It is perhaps her renowned interpretation of Bizet’s Carmen for which she is best known. Sara has performed the iconic character worldwide, most notably at Santa Fe Opera, Toulouse (under Michel Plasson), the Palau de les Arts Valencia (under Lorin Maazel), Geneva Opera, Welsh National Opera, English National Opera and the Beijing Music Festival, where she became the first western interpreter of the role to be presented in the capital of China since the Cultural Revolution. She also created the title role in the world première of Tobias Picker’s Thérèse Raquin at Dallas Opera and Nicholas Lens’ Shellshock, A Requiem of War at La Monnaie in Brussels.

She said: ‘It is my great good fortune to join Lynne Dawson as her Deputy Head of Vocal Studies and her team of distinguished teachers. I owe so much to the RNCM, to my vocal tutors and to Joseph Ward and Stefan Janski. For me this is like coming home. I look forward to guiding the journeys of our young singers, through a dynamic curriculum, towards long, healthy and successful careers.’

Sara will start her new position in September, succeeding Susan Roper who is stepping down after 15 years in post.

Professor Lynne Dawson added: ‘The School of Vocal Studies and Opera is delighted to welcome Sara to this important position. As one of most esteemed alumni, Sara brings with her a wealth of experience and I know that our students will thrive under her guidance. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Susan Roper for her outstanding dedication and commitment to the RNCM and in particular to the Vocal Department, and for her wonderful teaching and leadership; we are looking forward to working with her as a Senior Vocal Tutor from September.’
