Gareth Small is Principal Trumpet with the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester.
He started playing the cornet aged 7 and was taught by his father Tony. When growing up in Swansea he played for Penclawdd Brass Band, West Glamorgan Youth Music ensembles, National Youth Brass Band and the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. Gareth studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London from 1989-1993. Before finishing his studies he joined the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester as Assistant-Principal Trumpet in 1993. He became Principal Trumpet in 2007.
Gareth is a member of London Brass and Hallé Brass and has played with ensembles all over the world. He has performed as guest Principal Trumpet with most of Britain’s Orchestras (LSO, LPO, RPO, CBSO, RLPO, BSO, ENO, the Philharmonia, London Sinfonietta, BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic and BBC NOW).
Gareth was soloist in association with the Black Dyke Brass Band in 2016, winning the soloist prize at the European Brass Band championship with them. He has had several works written for him including a Trumpet Concerto by Alun Hoddinott, a double concerto for Trumpet & Clarinet by Helen Grime, a Sonata by film composer Mark Thomas, a Suite by Andrew Gant and a piece for flugelhorn and piano dedicated by Karl Jenkins.
Outside his Hallé commitments Gareth is in much demand as a soloist, clinician and session musician. He has given solo recitals and masterclasses all over the world. Can be heard on numerous CD’s with the Hallé, Ti Adoro (Pavarotti) and Mike Oldfield Music of the Spheres.
He has played on over 100 TV adverts over the last 25 years, including British Airways, Heineken, Sainsbury’s, Peugeot cars, Umbro, Playstation, George Foreman grill, St Ivel Shape, Famous Grouse and Goodyear Tyres to name a few.
Gareth can also be heard on numerous movie soundtracks including Beauty and the Beast, Pete’s Dragon, Bridget Jones’ Baby, Hacksaw Ridge, The Promise, Into the Woods, Mocking Jay (Hunger Games), Disney’s Cinderella, Captain America (civil war), The Force Awakens (Star Wars Trailers), Wolf Warrior II, Victor Frankenstein, Return Of The King (Lord of the Rings), Elizabeth The Golden Age, Evil Dead, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Turbo the Snail, Captain Underpants, Victoria and Abdul, Bright, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Swords & Sceptres, Penguins, Vice, Avengers Endgame, Dora and the lost city of Gold, Artemis Fowl, Knives Out and Doctor Doolittle, Death on the Nile, A boy called Christmas and Don’t Look Up.
Gareth is a Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he teaches trumpet. He also teaches at the Royal Northern College of Music and Chethams School of Music in Manchester.
