James Clark’s musical career spans five decades of achievement. A chamber musician at heart, he has collaborated with many distinguished musicians, including Stephen Kovacevich, Mikhail Pletnev, Steven Isserlis, Michael Collins, Adrian Brendel and Simon Trpceski, and a member of the Endellion Quartet and the Raphael Ensemble.
As a recitalist and soloist. His many recordings include Bach and Maxwell Davies Concertos, and Messiaen, Alkan, Brahms, Britten, Bridge and Dvorak Chamber Works. His recording of Vaughan Williams’ Lark Ascending has been particularly well-received.
James has held Concert Master positions with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Philharmonia Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also been Guest Concert Master with the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Zurich Tonhalle Orchestras.
James has conducted the Philharmonia, BBC NOW and the RSNO, and visited Venezuela several times to teach as part of El Sistema, conducting the Simon Bolivar Orchestra at the invitation of Gustavo Dudamel.
Since 2010, James has prioritised Chamber Music mentoring and Individual Teaching, together with delivering Seminars and Orchestra Leadership classes.
James began his musical career at King’s College, Cambridge, with further studies at the Royal College of Music in London.
Undergraduate Teaching
Teaching undergraduate, masters and postgraduate students.
Giving orchestral training classes and performance classes, particularly focussing on leadership and principal roles for strings, and run audition training classes.
I take sectionals with college orchestras, including conducting full strings rehearsals in preparation for orchestral concerts.
I lead and take part in student conductor masterclasses, new music concerts and student composition concerts.
Postgraduate Teaching
Teaching one-to-one and group performance classes.
Supporting students in application and preparation for professional work in orchestras and chamber music.
I offer opportunities for orchestra and chamber audition and trial preparation.
