Julian attended the RNCM between 1986-89, where he obtained PPRNCM and PPRNCMch.mus, GRNCM, whilst studying under Mike Purton and David Cripps. During his student years he played with the NYO and ECYO, as well as reaching the Brass final in the Young Musician of the Year (1986).
After a brief spell freelancing (Opera North, RLPO, Hallé, BBC Philharmonic), he joined the Hallé Orchestra as fifth horn in 1990, and became Assistant Principal in 2002. He is a founder member of Hallé Brass, which has toured internationally and produced a number of recordings. In more recent years, he has been actively involved in the Hallé’s education department, including projects in Indonesia and throughout the UK.
