Having completed his studies with Thomas Martin (London) and Ludwig Streicher (Vienna), Ronan spent a couple of years as a member of the Irish Chamber Orchestra before joining the BBC Philharmonic as Co Principal double bass in 2002.

Since joining he has made over 100 recordings with the orchestra on the Chandos label and has toured extensively throughout  Europe and the Far East.

Alongside this, Ronan is a regular guest principal bass with several orchestras across the UK including the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia and Opera North.

He has also been involved in several chamber music collaborations, developing ongoing relationships with such quartets as the Voglers (Berlin) and the Callinas (London).

He is passionate about educating young bass players, particularly in the world of orchestral playing, and gives  regular masterclasses at the Royal Northern College of Music.

Forthcoming engagements include Ronan premiering Ivor Hodgson’s concerto for double bass.
