Helen Grime In Focus V3_1045

Throughout the year our In Focus series invites trailblazing composers to the RNCM. Behind the scenes they work closely with our staff and students, culminating in a compelling day of performances. This Spring we’re delighted to welcome Helen Grime.

Taking inspiration from paintings and literature alike, she is renowned for her masterful compositional style and musical story telling.

Helen’s visit rounds off with an incredible side-by-side performance. Showcasing her colourful palette and exciting original sound world, students from our Brand New Orchestra join forces with the BBC Philharmonic. They’ll perform together in the first half with the BBC Philharmonic taking stage in the second half. Their programme features works by Helen and our composition students.

Notions of nature and art link Helen’s pieces. Nocturnal miniatures in Night Songs are performed alongside the highly virtuosic Limina, a musical depiction of Norwegian author Tarjei Vesaas’s 1963 novel The Ice Palace. Helen’s music follows Vesaas’s story of a young girl’s emotions as she moves between chambers within a frozen waterfall.

Woven Space offers an epic symphonic interplay of weaving lines and musical shapes, taking its name from Laura Ellen Bacon’s basket-like art structure of the same name.
