About
Part of RNCM Day of Percussion.
Kai Strobel is one of the most exciting and influential percussionists of his generation, and his artistry has earned him top honours at the TROMP Percussion Competition and the prestigious ARD Music Competition. As the RNCM’s International Visiting Professor of Percussion, Strobel performs side-by-side in this showcase with RNCM’s rising percussion talent.
A highlight of this performance includes Steve Reich’s Quartet for 2 vibraphones and 2 pianos. Born out of a game of musical one-upmanship with fellow composer Nico Muhly, the piece is a departure from the composer’s earlier music. Reich takes inspiration for this piece from a string quartet and uses the slow movement in particular to explore harmonies not usually found in his music. Reich frequently jumps between keys and breaks continuity, while maintaining his signature sense of pulse and rhythmic groove.
Kai Strobel has performed with leading orchestras across Europe and beyond, including the Bavarian State Symphony and the St Petersburg State Capella. Committed to education, Strobel holds a Professorship at the Conservatorio Della Svizzera Italiana and, along with his brother, co-founded Boum-Percussion Academy.
