Gondwana Records turns 10 this year and as part of our celebrations we are delighted to present two of our favourite live bands in a unique double bill. Plus a DJ set from label boss Matthew Halsall.
Captivating, ethereal and majestic, Mammal Hands are driven by their unique line-up of drums, piano and saxophone. Their hypnotic music draws on a rich wealth of influences from Sufi trance and West African music to folk music, contemporary classical, spiritual jazz and electronica to produce something uniquely their own. Their powerful live shows have seen them hailed as one of the most exciting bands in Europe and they are joined tonight by another very special band, the mighty STUFF.
The Belgium five piece, STUFF specialise in a deep cross-genre groove, spanning from broken hip-hop to more electronic and jazz influenced future funk. They defy easy categorisation. Writing for Jazz Standard, Tina Edward said ‘If an energy drink could make music, it would sound like STUFF‘, a description that does more to describe their sound than established genre tags. Utilising lesser-used instruments like the wind synth, alongside the familiar array of drums and electric bass, synthesizers and turntables, they’re able scatter rhythms, melodies and electronic effects across their canvas with a Pollock-like abandon, creating music that while heavy in groove has great depth and intrigue.
