What's On
Jasdeep Singh Degun (sitar)
Thursday 3 October 2024, 7.30pm
RNCM Concert Hall
Part of our new Inspirational Artists series.
A custodian of tradition with a restless passion for innovation, award-winning sitarist Jasdeep Singh Degun returns to the RNCM.
Jasdeep is redefining the musical landscape for his peers and future generations with his extraordinary skill for blending Western and Indian classical music traditions. He remains true to his roots through the gayaki ang style of sitar, which mimics the human voice, while always seeking to push beyond the boundaries.
‘In our tradition, you’re always a student,’ he says. ‘My teacher, Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE, shows me the vastness of music and how much there is still to explore.’
In this performance, Jasdeep unveils the power of the Indian raga or raag, a musical form of storytelling where the performer interprets a traditional melody passed down through generations. Jasdeep will infuse his artistry and imagination through several movements while collaborating with tabla player Himmet Bahra, supported by Mehrbaan Singh on tanpura. Lasting around 80 minutes, the journey comes full circle and, according to ancient Sanskrit texts, has the ability to ‘colour’ or even open the mind along the way.
