‘I believe that originality happens when you are able to turn off the voices in your head that try telling you what you are supposed to do and rather pursue what you love to do.’ Johannes Berauer
Tonight’s event celebrates the new recording Hourglass by young, cool Austrian composer Johannes Berauer – his first project for small jazz ensemble. This newly-formed quintet was put together specifically for this album and tour and features a couple of Manchester jazz favourites, Mike Walker and Gwilym Simcock. Johannes described the line-up as a ‘dream band’.
This album is a genre-busting creation, jazz-based but with influences including Bach’s counterpoint, Messiaen’s sense of harmony and M C Escher’s paradox views of reality.
In the opening set, members of the quintet are joined by RNCM students to play a mix of tunes spanning The Impossible Gentlemen, Indian percussion and chamber jazz.
