Jazz from Around the World

Saturday 12 May 7.30pm

RNCM Theatre

Mike Hall director

Tonight, the RNCM Jazz Collective explores the origins of jazz, how the genre evolved and how its influence continues to spread across the globe. We recently asked the band’s director Mike Hall about these connections and he told us:

‘While we may think of jazz as originating in North America, there is now music from all over the globe that we consider to be jazz. Sometimes this is down to the development of a country’s indigenous music evolving along a jazz path such as South African Township Jazz like August One (by Adam Glasser and Dudu Pukwana). There are also many examples of American jazz being influenced by traits of world music such as Duke Ellington’s Far East Suite.’

This gig will pull together an exciting and eclectic set-list including music from Scandinavia, Cuba, Lebanon and China, plus a few surprises along the way.
