Spontaneity and instinct are the building blocks of our innovative Make-it-up-as-we-go-along (MIUAWGA) Ensemble.

Led by our Head of Jazz and Improvisation, Steve Berry, MIUAWGA is the RNCM’s only ensemble dedicated entirely to making music through improvisation.

We’re delighted to be joined by Byron Wallen, composer, improviser and trumpet player of global renown. He will be collaborating with our students for this unique event, drawing influence from Central and Eastern African traditional music.

Expect to also encounter elements of the rhythms and harmonic approaches of Thelonious Monk , Elmo Hope and Bud Powell, as well as compositions and arrangements carrying unmistakable echoes of Duke Ellington, Gil Evans and Bill Holman.

You’ll never anything like it again – literally – so come and experience the magnificent musical conversations sparked by in the moment musical choices.
